iPAQs Helping Disney Share the Magic With Hearing Impaired

A recent CNet article is reporting that Disney has begun using the wireless capabilities of the Compaq iPAQ Pocket PC to help out with captioning services for hearing impaired visitors in their Buena Vista, FL theme park.

By putting the captioning service on the handheld device the user is able to move the device as necessary. Earlier captioning attempts relied on fixed display screens.

The mobile devices are also being used by the park to assist with translation services. Using the same wireless technology the park is able to transmit translated versions of many of the rides and attractions. The French, German, Japanese, Portuguese and Spanish versions of the attractions all offer vocal characterizations which are true to the original.

The service is free, but a refundable deposit may be required when checking out one of the iPAQs. Disney has said that there are plans for the system to be expanded to their Orange County, CA parks in the near future.
