Navigation Technologies provides digital map coverage for Navman personal navigation system for Helwett-Packard's iPAQ.

Digital map vendor Navigation Technologies' NAVTECH map data is slated to be used in Navman's PDA-based application for transforming Hewlett-Packard's iPAQ Pocket PC into a self-contained navigation system.

In addition to using NAVTECH digital maps, Navman said it tapped NAVTECH Professional Services (NPS) to assist with product development and implementation, as NPS engineers traveled to Navman's New Zealand headquarters to support Navman engineers in the creation of a new data conversion process.

Using NAVTECH Data Server Suite Framework, the NPS team was able to create a process that converts NAVTECH data into Navman's format. "It is our goal to have the best hardware, best application and best digital map data for this product," said Rus Graham, Vice President of Marketing at Navman USA. "Navigation Technologies' superior detailed data, including its attributes, positional accuracy and expansive coverage, made them the best solution for our needs and completes our best of breed solution."

According to Navman, the Navamn GPS 3420 ($299) bundle's PDA software, NAVTECH maps for North America, and a GPS receiver sleeve with built in Type I & II CF slot to enable the Compaq iPAQ to provide a complete self-contained navigation system. By downloading the needed map area from a computer to the iPAQ or CompactFlash card, users have access to route calculations and directions via text and full cartographic display. In addition, the application is voice supported. Navman said it will offer bi-annual map updates for the product, with the first map update free of charge.

The Navman GPS 3420 comes with a GPS sleeve, street mapping software, in-car mounting kit and a vehicle power adapter. Its also includes a built-in Type II CompactFlash slot.
