If the Bluetooth keyboard is a boon for passengers—letting them get more work done during train and plain rides—Dell's other Bluetooth peripheral is for drivers. The Dell GPS Navigation System delivers you get clear and effective driving directions from your handheld.

The Navigation System sells for $249, which seems a bit high, but it comes with a good bundle of equipment. You get the GPS device itself (which measures 3.3 x 1.8 x 1.1-inches and weighs 2.6 oz.), a flexible window mount, and a car charger (which can power both the GPS unit and your handheld, as well, if you take the adapter off your Axim's desktop charger and use it here).

To begin, you'll need to install the software and map data from the two CDs. We recommend you buy a large storage card along with the Navigation System—if you don't have one already—because you'll need one for the included NAVTEQ maps. You have the option of installing whichever state maps you want, or installing by city and surrounding radius to save space. (Be sure to mail the included postcard to NAVTEQ and you'll be notified of future map updates.)

Setting up the GPS hardware is also fairly simple. The flexible window mount attaches to your car's front windshield with a suction cup and can be positioned however you like. Place your Axim in the included fabric holder, which attaches to the window mount magnetically.

The GPS sits on your dashboard, so that it gets a clear view of the sky. A rubbery backing helps it stay in place. Three lights on its lower front let you know how it's doing: a blue light tells you know when it's made a Bluetooth connection, a green light shows whether or not it has satellite contact (usually this takes less than a minute), and an orange light lets you know when to recharge the battery.

When you're driving, the beauty of the software really comes out. The Axim display changes from daytime to nighttime mode automatically, so that you can see the screen well in bright or dim conditions, and you can set the map to show you points of interest along your trip. Verbal commands let you know when to turn, so that you can leave your eyes on the road, and the program automatically adjusts if you miss a turn, adjusting the directions so that you can still get to your destination.

Already a standout product, the Dell Axim Pocket PC becomes a lot more useful with the release of these two peripherals. Put your Bluetooth connection to work while you ride or drive along.

This system is ok at best. The big problem is Dell and Navteq. Neither one of them will give you any help for downloading new maps, which do not exist. Which suck because dell said there will always be updates available. Not the case. DO Not get this...more
