By James Miller
PocketPCTools.com is reporting that Toshiba has a sequel to its e805 Pocket PC in the works. Word about the update comes from French online retailer Surcouf.com. According to the rumor, the e830 will essentially be the same as the e805 except that it will run on one of Intel's new PXA270 XScale processors at 520MHz. The e805 is powered by the fastest mobile CPU in the previous XScale generation, 400MHz. The new model will also add Bluetooth personal area networking to the Wi-Fi (802.11b) networking in the current model. This is a feature users of the e805 have long sought. The new Intel processors, formerly code-named Bulverde, are designed for mobile devices that require multimedia, low power consumption and security. It enables high processing power for 3D games and advanced video with Intel wireless MMX technology, reduces power consumption with Intel SpeedStep technology and supports 4 mega-pixel digital cameras with Intel Quick Capture technology. There are no reports that the e830 will add a camera though. Like the e805, the e830 will also have a 4-inch VGA (480x640) display. The new handheld should ship with Microsoft's new version of its mobile operating system, however. Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition, among other things, includes native support for VGA screens. In the e805, Toshiba used proprietary software to support this resolution. And only four applications that came bundled with the devices could runs at VGA, while others dropped down to 240x320. Toshiba is expected to release a free upgrade to Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition for e805 owners. Other than the addition of Bluetooth, a new processor and probably the latest version of Windows Mobile, it looks like the design of the e830 should be similar to the e805. That means, users will still get 128MB of RAM, 64MB of ROM and two expansion slots, one CompactFlash and the other SDIO-enabled Secure Digital, for memory and peripherals. According to Surcouf.com, it will start offering the e830 in July for around 500 Euros, which is about $600. The site also said the e805 would be discontinued. Only one handheld with Intel's latest processor and Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition has been officially unveiled so far. And that Pocket PC is the ASUS MyPal A730. Like the e805, the MyPal A730 features a VGA display. The PDA's screen will measure 3.7 inches, however, but will be run at 18-bit for 262,144 colors, surpassing all current Pocket PC models. It will also include the new 520MHz XScale processor. Other features include 128MB of RAM, two expansion slots (CompactFlash and Secure Digital), Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and a 1.3 megapixel camera, which means it will be able to take pictures as large as 1280 by 960 pixels.
