By James Alan Miller
GPS (global positioning system) device vendor Navman has introduced the Navman PiN (Personal Interactive Navigation), a Pocket PC with an integrated GPS receiver. The new handheld is similar in concept to Garmin's iQUE 3600 Palm OS PDA, which was the first PDA to integrate GPS functionality. It is also a re-branded version of MiTac's Mio 168 GPS Pocket PC, which as been available for a few months. According to Navman, the Pocket PC comes with a pre-loaded configuration SD card with the latest version of its navigation software, SmartST V2. Software capabilities include Microsoft Pocket Outlook integration for address-to- contact routing, a time-saving zip code search tool, the ability to pre-select areas to avoid, a town-to-town routing function, complete route summary, enhanced zooming functionality and a 3D map display option that aims to enhance the visual navigation experience. Other features include address-to- address routing, selectable map views, automatic and manual zoom for map detail control, Back-on-Track rerouting when off-course, day and night screen modes and a points-of-interest library. The company claims the fully automated software provides voice guidance, in addition to visual driving instructions as well as large display icons and easy-to-read maps, in addition to a touch-screen interface. In terms of hardware specifications, the PiN features a Pocket PC standard 3.5-inch and 240 x 320 pixel color display, a 300MHz Intel PXA-255 XScale processor and 64MB of internal RAM. It runs on Windows Mobile 2003 and sells for $500. Related Links:
