Hewlett-Packard (HP) released a much needed ROM update, version 1.10, for its iPAQ hx4700 series back in May. The patch fixed a number bugs and offered some enhancements.

Unfortunately, quite a few iPAQ hx4700 owners noticed a huge reduction in how long their device's battery would last. You see, ROM update 1.10 introduced an error where the handheld would think its battery was empty when it wasn't.

The computer and printer giant has - finally - therefore introduced an update to the update to solve this problem. ROM version 1.10 must be installed on the handheld before installing the new SoftPaq—HP's name for the patch.

The free hx4700 ROM update addresses Wi-Fi improvements and Compact Flash Card Recognition issues, and delivers performance enhancements.

There is also an upgrade to Microsoft Windows Mobile Media 10 for the Pocket PC series. This application enables the seamless transfer of media from a PC running Windows XP to the PDA, in addition to the ability to playback audio and video on the handset.

Enhancements also provide an improved Microsoft Pocket Internet Explorer, enables more than one settings application to be active at the same time, adds new data connectivity icon to the Title bar, improves ServerSync application stability, and enables dialing of a number that starts with a pound sign.

The patch fixes issues with:

  •  wireless connectivity.
  •  execution of .NET framework.
  •  very high-volume audio signal from third-party applications that could result in potential speaker damage.
  •  where the microphone automatic gain control (AGC) setting was not saved after a power cycle.
  •  where the user interface for the handheld would indicate that the user was connected to a network that was not present.
  •  where protected extensible authentication protocol (PEAP) authentication would fail with no indication that the user's password had expired.
  •  where Pocket Internet Explorer would stall and fail to load a page if the HTTP post was larger than 16K.
  •  where Wi-Fi connection status was incorrectly indicated for some conditions. Fixes issue with an active modem connection where the handheld was unable to re-establish a connection after the USB cable was unplugged.
  •  that occurred when using WPA-PSK authentication where the handheld failed to authenticate to a second access point (AP) with the same SSID and key.
  •  where the client device packets did not properly route to the target LAN when a point-to-point protocol (PPP) connection was made.
  •  where an exception was generated When disconnecting a serial line Internet protocol (SLIP) server session.
