FileMaker Mobile Spreads Wings Beyond Desktop

By James Alan Miller

For the first time, FileMaker Mobile enables Palm and Pocket PC device users to synchronize outside the confines of the desktop, as version 8 is compatible with hosted databases on FileMaker Server.

Server support eases IT management headaches, according to FileMaker VP of marketing and services Ryan Rosenberg. “FileMaker Pro makes it possible for anyone to create and deploy a workgroup solution that spans desktops and handhelds. FileMaker Mobile 8 is a major advancement in the ease of management of larger workgroup solutions," Rosenberg says.

Supported FileMaker Mobile applications range from simple lists to more complex databases—inventory records, customer information, student records, work orders, research notes, or help-desk records.

In the new version, some pre-designed solutions—Contact Management, Asset Management, Research Notes, Student Records, Movie Library and Recipe Tracking—are ready to synchronize and be used out of the box as well. Rosenberg adds, "the new starter solutions make it even easier for individuals to get started fast."

Two-way synchronization of PDAs and smartphones can take place between databases created in FileMaker Pro 7, FileMaker Developer 7 (including runtime versions), FileMaker Pro 8, FileMaker Pro 8 Advanced (including runtime versions), FileMaker Server 8, and FileMaker Server 8 Advanced.

See the FileMaker Web site for pricing and upgrade information.
