Palm’s Foleo Attracts Blogging Service, More Third-Party Apps

Although some are skeptical about the prospects of Foleo in the smartphone marketplace, the device Palm defines as a Mobile Companion, has had no problem garnering support from third-party developers. The latest companies to announce support for Foleo include Palm OS developer TealPoint Software and Six Apart, which offers a number of blogging services.

At $499, the ultra-slim, 2.5-pound Foleo is targeted at those who don't require the full power of a laptop, but would still like a large screen (10 inch) and full keyboard when reading, editing and responding to e-mail, including attachments, and accessing the Web than is possible through a smartphone directly. The Linux-run device automatically synchronizes files and data back and forth between itself and a smartphone over a wireless Bluetooth connection.

Six Apart will make a number of blogging services available for Foleo, including Vox (see top image), LiveJournal, TypePad and Moveable Type. With these services, Foleo users can keep blog and journal entries up to date and stay current with their communities.

Vox is a free personal online service for sharing experiences with friends and family. Privacy filters give members granular control over who views their stories, photos, videos or audio. Media integration means members can insert content from popular web services they already use, such as Amazon, Flickr and Photobucket.

LiveJournal is a community where members share their thoughts in words and media both in personal journals and explore diverse interests throughout LiveJournal's communities.

As for TypePad, it is a hosted blogging service preferred by professionals, small businesses, and enthusiasts. It provides tools for publishing, updating and sharing information on the Web.

Movable Type, on the other hand, is a blogging platform for businesses, enterprises, and professionals. Six Apart says it is designed to meet the Web site content-management needs of growing organizations and to serve as a social media platform that enables businesses to create community-driven Web sites.

TealPoint applications to be available for Foleo include:

• TealSafe, an encrypted data program, stores, saves and organizes passwords, credit card numbers, and other personal information in a password-protected, secure and encrypted mobile database.

• ShortCircuit, a new puzzle action game. Players connect falling conduit pieces into explosive loops of energy in a frantic race against the clock.
