At the Web 2.0 Expo in San Francisco last week, Palm broadened the available of the Mojo SDK for its new webOS to more developers. Those interested in the early access to the SDK , which had only been provided to a select group of Palm partners, can apply at the Palm Developer Network
Web site.
With Mojo, developers have the ability to integrate their applications into core webOS functionality, such as linked contacts, layered calendars, multitasking, notifications and GPS capabilities. Palm asserts providing developers with the freedom to integrate unique webOS functionality and services into their applications paves the way for a rich catalog of innovative offerings for users.
"Developers are an incredibly important part of the webOS ecosystem, and we're eager to get the SDK into their hands," said Palm senior VP of Application Software and services Michael Abbott in a statement. "Now that the SDK will be available to a broader base of developers, we think the enthusiasm for webOS will only grow and accelerate. We're very excited to work with developers to make this unique development environment even better."
According to Palm, access to the program will initially will be limited as the tools and systems continue to be refined and improved. General availability isn't scheduled for later this year.
In related news, Palm also announced plans for integrating cloud services into the web OS platform and an application from MotionApps will allow legacy Palm OS applications to run on webOS devices. The company’s eagerly-anticipated Pre smartphone will be the first handset to run on the webOS.
