No keyboard input

I can get the initiation screen, but when I am asked to enter the local time, the keyboard does not work. After the initiation screen, the regular screen comes on, but again, no keyboard input. Another clue is that when I power down, I cannot get any screen again unless I do a complete reset (remove all batteries) again. I have tried new batteries. So, it seems the problem is with the power as well as the keyboard (input). I can't find anyone else who had mentioned this kind of problem, and I suspect sending the z50 back to IBM would cost more than a used unit from e-bay. Oh well... Thanks for the help.
