My PV-5000A (32MB Australian/International model) came to me used. When I first got it the battery "would not charge". I downloaded the "BattRefresh" program from Sharp, installed it, and for the next 18 months the battery worked and recharged at or better than original factory spec! Never a power problem after that, as long as I began each full recharge on external power by running the refresh program. But recently I did a full backup of the unit with MS ActiveSync, and then dismantled it to repair an old crack in the case I hadn't bothered with when I first bought it. I removed the backup battery, the RAM chip (which, by the way, appears to be exactly the same chip as in my USA model PV-5000, NOT the source of the "extra" 16MB of memory as you might think), unplugged the cable from the battery pack at the circuit board socket, and in fact completely dis-assembled the entire unit. This is the second time I've had it apart; the first time was to fix a screen hinge that had gone bad. I put it back together and did a full restore. Everything looked fine until I tried running it on battery power. Nothing - it would not turn on. Plugged in the external power cord and it worked fine EXCEPT IT HAD DONE A FULL RESET. But the LED showing battery charging activity did not light as was usual (rapid blink when first charging, later switching to steady on). I installed and ran BattRefresh and it told me the battery was fine & didn't need to be refreshed. (Sure, it was fully charged when I dismantled the unit). I did another full restore on external power and everything looked fine until I unplugged the power cord. Then instead of just switching over to battery power the unit went dead. I started it up again on external power to find it had once again done a FULL RESET. A volt-meter test confirms the 3 cells of the battery pack are fully charged, and power is available. Backup battery is brand new and tests good. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to kick-start the unit into knowing the battery pack exists? It seems to have forgotten... Thanks.
