Message:If you upgrade to WinCE2.0, you get to use the newer (more available) WinCE2.0 software applications, plus you get spellcheck built directly into Pocket Word. You can also use MS-ActiveSync 3.1 (or 3.5) to sync with your desktop (much better than HPC Explorer (that is used to sync when using WinCE-1.0)). You also get PowerPoint Viewer (however, this is almost unusable on the Velo-1 (due to small screen size and lack of color). You get more gray-scales on the screen (however, I don't really find this to be that beneficial). You also lose lots of RAM (WinCE-2.0 on the Velo-1 is a "RAM-Hog"). If you don't use the ROM mini-bay for the WinCE2.0 upgrade ROM mini-card, you can fill the mini-bay with a 4-Meg Philips Flash Memory mini-card (but you will have to install the TrueFFS driver software to get the Velo-1 to recognize the 4-Meg Philips Flash Memory mini-chip). With the price of used Velo-500's today, I recommend that if you want to go to WinCE-2.0, that you buy a used Velo-500 – that way (with your 8Meg RAM mini-chip) you will have 24 Megs of RAM (total) and also have an open ROM mini-bay (for installation of a 4-Meg Philips Flash Memory mini-card, since you are running WinCE-2.0 you will have to install the Flash.exe driver to get the Velo-500 to recognize the Flash card).
